What is calligraphy?

Calligraphy is the fine art of beautiful letters. Western calligraphy is typically written with pens, though it is sometimes written with a brush. Through the ages, calligraphy has evolved as cultures evolved, and different regions developed different styles in different time periods.

Calligraphy is not as common as it once was (the printing press is, after all, much more convenient for producing copies of books!), but there remains a vibrant calligraphy community devoted to maintaining this ancient tradition. From reproducing scripts found in centuries-old manuscripts to pushing the envelope (ha) of calligraphy in a more modern, experimental direction, calligraphers are still evolving new ways of writing — and producing beautiful works of art. It is an honor and a joy to be a part of this tradition.
